Reggae Concert Series – BEENIE MAN: King of the Dancehall

My first time seeing Beenie Man perform left a lasting impression. It was the first time I’d experienced an artist who would not get off the stage. What I mean is, his time was up, and he wouldn’t get off. He hadn’t yet finished going through his hits for the audience, and for certain, we wanted it all! This was 15 years ago. Since then, the hits haven’t stopped coming.

I had the opportunity to talk with Beenie in an interview for this very magazine a little while ago, and he spoke of his love of creating music for the people. Sounds like rhetoric perhaps. But you don’t churn out a volume of hits like the ones listed below in a career spanning over 30 years without the people behind you. So who’s the King of the Dancehall?
