10 Questions With Festa

By Festa

During this past Miami – Broward One Carnival, I was able to sit down for “10 Questions with Festa” with one of the most talented and most humble dj’s in the music business, Marlon Marcano aka Eternal Vibes. Eternal Vibes is one of the most featured dj’s in South Florida for not just Carnival but for events year-round. Let’s get to know a little more about Eternal Vibes with “10 Questions with Festa”.

1. What is the meaning of your alias, Eternal Vibes?

“The meaning of Eternal Vibes speaks for itself, Eternal means forever, everlasting, eternity and when you put Eternal and Vibes together, Vibes being high energy, forever, long-lasting vibes, non-stop vibes … Eternal Vibes!”

2. When did you first start out in the dj game?

“Well I’m not gonna disclose my age, but at the age of 12 was when I realize that I was really in love with music. I used to live in Brooklyn and I moved to Miami, and in 1994 I started with my own dj name, Eternal Vibes and kept it going from there. My love for music was always from when I was growing up; I had a lot of family surrounding me that was in to the music game, dj, artists and stuff like that. So, it was only right for me to pick up where my family left off. This is my ‘9 to 5’, my career, I put all my energy into this, all my time and everything into this, and it’s for the love of music. I have a passion for music and I focus on that, I am trying to stay in one field and my field is the music field.”

3. What is your drive when you are on the turntables?

“My biggest drive is to see that I have control of everyone in front of me, for me to actually be in control and make 500, 1000, 2000, 10000 people all jump at one time or move left to right because of either what I’m playing or what I’m saying, that is the biggest high that you can get in the world. There is nothing to go beyond that, to be in control of so many people all at one time, you can’t ask for anything more than that!”

4. Where have you been to, spreading the love of Soca? What are the major carnivals that you have been involved with?

“There are too many places for me to name, but I have been to Toronto’s Caribana that is very big on the Soca industry; I’ve play in New York City, my home town. I’ve played in quite a bit of the Caribbean, I’ve also played in places like Trinidad Carnival, Antigua, St. Lucia, Turks & Caicos, DC Carnival, Cayman Islands of course, my home away from home, and many other islands. I would love to expand into the European market and do places like Notting Hill, Italy, Spain, France… to spread the Eternal Vibes experience so if you are ever interested in bring some Eternal Vibes over there, CALL ME!!”

5. Why did you choose music as your profession?

“It’s the passion and love that I have for the music, I’ve had jobs working 9 – 5. I wouldn’t tell you a lie; I have lost my job because of music, going to play music in different places. It’s the passion I have for the music; I’ve grown to love many genres of music and it’s that passion that keeps me going, it’s being in control of so many people that are feeding off your energy, you can’t ask for anything more than that, that’s what keeps me going with that.“

6. Which dj’s do you look up to for inspiration and as true leaders in the Soca Industry?

“There are guys from New York like Back2Basics and down here in Miami, my Boy, my brother for life, he comes from another mother, but I represent him and big him up to the fullest and he goes by the name of House Arrest. I got to biggup my family Sound Revolution, which is owned my uncle and is one of the biggest sound systems in Miami. When I moved to Miami, Sound Revolution was main access to play on turntables and to sharpen my skills. These are the people that have made Eternal Vibes into what it I am today.”

7. If I were unknowing of Soca and Carnival, what is it about them that’s so intoxicating and addictive?

“The drive, the energy of the Soca music between the drums, the horns, the many instruments that make up the music, it is so high energy. Whether you are a fan of Soca music or not, from the time you hear that beat, you tap your foot, bounce you head, you can’t stand still. It doesn’t matter where you come from or how old you are, you can’t stand still. Once you feel that riddim you must fall in to the Vibes.”

8. What is your favorite artist to play and what song?

“There are so many artists out there that give you that energy with the Soca music it is really hard to pick out one. It’s too hard to pick out just one; when I play music, I go off of Vibes. I look at my crowd and I see what songs I need to move them, whether it’s something from this year or something from 20 years ago. It’s really hard to say that there is a song or artist that I have as a favorite, I am a fan of all, and it’s what moves the crowd, that is what I play.”

9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now in the music business?

“Wow, I’m not even thinking taking that long. I am more hoping 1 to 3 years, getting in to the producing side of music, become a well recognized international dj in the industry. And before I die, I think I have to make a contribution by singing a song.”

10. What advice would you give to young aspiring Soca dj’s that are trying to make it in the Industry?

“First and foremost, be humble! Be friends with everyone, even your enemies. The way the world is set-up, it’s all about networking. I would advise them to do your research, do your homework, and study the music, create your own vibes. Be original, do not carbon copy anyone else, be original, once you can do that and have that vibe to entertain, you have no worries.”

Even though it’s only 10 Questions with Festa, I had a bonus question for DJ Eternal Vibes….

Bonus: Who is your favorite Mas Band to play for?

“It must be Swanky International, Cayman Islands, that’s my home away from home. I have played for bands and parties all over the world; it’s all about the energy!”

I thank Eternal Vibes for sharing time with us to share a little about him and what he is about. I hope you have enjoyed “10 Questions with Festa” and look forward to bringing you more from Caribbean people making their mark.
