Atlanta, Georgia – The diversity of Caribbean culture comes together in a celebration of mas and music for the 2011 Annual Atlanta Caribbean Carnival.

The Atlanta Caribbean Carnival Bandleaders Association, Inc. (ACCBA) brings together two staples of Caribbean-style Carnival: Mas, the culturally-expressive art form of creating beautifully decorated costumes; and Music, as expressed through steel bands, DJs, and musical artists. Both elements highlight the diversity of Caribbean culture and can also be found in the many events leading up to the annual Carnival celebration.

On May 28, 2011 the celebration begins with over 25 masquerade bands, troupes, and steel bands all showcasing an elaborate array of costumes and musical revelry through the streets of downtown Atlanta during the Parade of Bands. Precisely at 12 noon the parade moves off from the Civic Center Marta Station on West Peachtree Street, through Peachtree Street, and ends at the Festival Village on Auburn Ave (between Jesse Hill Jr. and Hilliard) at 2pm. The Carnival celebration then continues with a wide variety of authentic Caribbean food and arts vendors, as well as a stage show featuring some of the Caribbean’s hottest talent. Confirmed to perform are Benjai (Trinidad), Edwin Yearwood (Barbados), Claudette Peters (Antigua), Skinny Fabulous (St Vincent), Rayvon (Barbados), Tian Winter (Antigua), Pumpa (U.S. Virgin Islands), Revolution Band (Atlanta), and Burning Flames (Antigua), and many more.

“We anticipate a large crowd for both the parade and Festival Village” states Patricia Henry, President of ACCBA. “The events we’ve organized leading up to May 28th offer the public an extended opportunity to experience the Caribbean right here in Atlanta.” ACCBA recently crowned the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival Princess, Junior Miss, and Queen who will each make a number of public appearances in the coming year. Other events leading up to the Carnival celebration are Pan in the City; the Atlanta Kaiso Monarch Competition; King, Queen, and Best Individual Competitions; and Children’s Carnival. Details on all these events can be found on the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival website www.atlantacarnival.org.
